a cappella
Mon-ke-ya is a fast, rhythmic, and energetic composition. The text found in the piece is a series of made-up syllables that have no purpose aside from providing a vehicle for the rhythmic content. Throughout the piece, two complementary rhythmic patterns are juxtaposed and are used as the primary musical motive found in the repeated passages sung on the texts “Ke-ya mon ke-ya ke-de-bus,” and “Mon ke-de ke-de-ya ke-bus”. Attentiveness to phrasing (in regard to the opposing marcato and legato sections of music), diction of a slightly percussive nature, and the balancing of the two complementary rhythms’ volumes will yield a performance that more fully utilizes the compositional techniques used in the creation of the piece.
